The Ancient and Honorable Carruthers Clan Int Society CCIS page is a meeting place for all or our Carruthers and related our family.
The word “clann” comes from the Gaelic word for children, and clan members claim kinship from their common ancestor whose name they proudly bear. We are and will remain proud of our Scottish heritage whether in the homeland or all corners of the world as a Border Reiver clan.
It is our sincere desire that you will be able to learn about our shared family , ancestry and genealogy. Our sincere wish is also to sustain the heritage and traditions of our Clan and its place in today’s society and to bring members back together.
Our Motto “Promptus et Fidelis”
Join us in exploring some of our very fascinating history of our clan. We will begin by learning of our Scottish roots in Dumfriesshire. Locally, the name was pronounced “Cridders” but there exist over 1200 spelling variations of the name, which include Carothers, Carouthers, Carrothers, Carruther, Carruthirs, Carruthers, Carrutherys, , Gridders and many more.
At different times the land holdings included the estates of Mouswald, Holmains, Dormont, Rammerscales, Isle, Dyke, Butterquhat, Woodfoot, Milne, Woodhead, Kinnell Hall, Macmaw, Breconsyde, Broomhills, Nether Wormanbie, Breconhill, OverDenbie, Nether Denbie, Whitecroft, Hardriggs, Portrack, Braes, Langholm, Carlisle and Barrow
In the 13th century, the family rose to be the hereditary stewards of Annandale under the Bruces. Nigel de Karruthers became Rector at nearby Ruthwell and rose to become Canon of Glasgow Cathedral in 1351 and was chancellor to Robert, Steward of Scotland (progenitor of the Stewart monarchs).
A John Carruthers was keeper of Lochmaben Casctle in 1446. This castle was at one time owned by the Bruces and may have been where Robert the Bruce was born.
In the 16th century, the Carruthers were included in the list of unruly clans in the West Marches in 1587 by King James VI. Lands were acquired in Mouswald but this line ended when Simon Carruthers was killed in a border raid and the lands passed to the Douglases of Drumlanrig with the marriage of the Carruthers heiress.
The Carruthers of Howmains continued however, until the estate was lost in 1772 when financial disaster struck. But a younger son of the last laird acquired the estate of Dormont in Dumfriesshire which is still held by his descendants.
The surname is now mainly found in Glasgow and Edinburgh. The Carruthers clan in Scotland is a member of the Armigerous Clans and Families of Scotland ie it has a recognised coat of arms.
